Change In Monthly Cycle

Does one of the perimenopause symptoms include an irregular or no monthly cycle? A little bleeding during the night as you sleep with a little spotting during the day for a few days instead of a full flow cycle?

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear An_257122,
Perimenopausal women certainly can have that sort of a bleeding pattern. However, irregular spotting can also be a marker of something misbehaving in the lining of the uterus (like a polyp or overgrowth of the lining of the uterus). So do keep track of your cycle and bleeding patterns, and do consult with your health care provider-(s)he might want to check on the lining of your uterus with an ultrasound or sampling the lining (endometrial biopsy).
Good luck,
Mary Jane
