My gyn recommended St. John's Wort for mood and hot flashes and Melotonin for sleep problems - they really worked for me.

Dear wadodson,
St. John's Wort is very commonly used in Europe as an antidepressant. Its mechanism of action is not totally understood-it probably acts mostly like an SSRI, although there is some suggestion it has some MAO inhibitor type activity. The major issue is getting it from a reliable source-again, as with many herbal products in the US, standardization is somewhat difficult.
One thing to remember about St. John's Wort-for women taking birth control pills, it may decrease their effectiveness-so if you are in that group, check in with your health care provider.
Hope you stay feeling well,
Mary Jane

I have tried Meltonin more than once for sleeping. Problem is NOTHING works. I've been a chronic insomniac since about 18 mths old. Never sleep more than a couple of hours a night, if that. My mom has watched my sleep patterns as recently as 2 yrs ago and has said that I average about 10 hrs a week. No clue why I have this problem but Melotonin, unfortuanately, does zero for me/ But thank you for the suggestions. I'll try the St John's Wort
