Low Vitamin D, reasons?

My 27-year-old husband's recent bloodwork came back showing that he has severely low Vitamin D. He was prescribed supplements that he takes once a week for a month. I am surprised but not overly concerned, and curious about the reason. We do live in the northeast, but he works outdoors every day of the year as an arborist, drinks milk, and eats lots of fish and leafy greens. He played contact sports throughout high school and college, and has always been very healthy, strong, and fit. Only unusual thing I've noticed is that he and his (also very healthy and fit) brother have trouble fighting off infections. Both have had several staph infections despite proper wound care after minor injuries (scrapes or small cuts from sports/work) requiring overnight hospitalization and IV antibiotics. What causes an otherwise healthy, out-doorsy type to have low Vitamin D? And could that be related to his susceptibility to infection?

It is absolutely related to his susceptibility to infection. Vitamin D levels directly affect your immune system!

Sorry I don't have an answer for why his levels are low. I would ask his doctor though. I would be very worried about it. Their has to be an answer to why he and his brother both have this problem. Tell the doctor about his brother too. GL
