Why am I getting hot flashes?!

Pierow posted:
This has probably been going on longer than I want to admit, but I'm finally getting annoyed. It seems that for no apparent reason I'll get a hot flash. My last one was just a few minutes ago sitting at work at my desk. I have a small fan blowing on me which helps. But I'm wondering why me, a 35 y/o male, would be having these? This isn't the first. It happens daily. I can be sitting at home reading a book or something in my recliner and eventually I'll start sweating for no reason. It's like someone keeps messing with my internal thermostat!

I'm sure there are many causes, so I'm not looking for anyone to say "oh it's this or that", but any suggestions would be great. Should I talk to my doctor about this?

Thanks!

you should talk to your doctor. get blood work done for your thyroid. you might have to take this test before eating or drinking anything. get all your blood work done, often. cbc, glucose, electrolytes, liver panel, etc... all of it. drink more water too, or way more water if you prefer. i know how annoying this can be, and it doesn't help anxious types either, just takes a good thorough investigation of ourselves to find the imbalance before we can resolve it.

I know what I do that causes hot flashes -- AND I was warned about this. I take Niacin capsules in order to lower my cholesterol without increasing my dosage of Rx-statins. In addition, when I started, it also caused occasional palpitations until I built up a tolerance for it. Now I just get the hot flashes sometimes, but a non-coated full-strenght aspirin (NOT any other NSAID) often helps. Why it doesn't always help is a mystery to me, but my cholesterol numbers are GREAT!

I'm VA and have all you've mentioned done on a regular basis, and I am not the anxious type, but I do have a mild thyroid problem. The rest of my reports look good. I do have mild diabetes and I drink only water except for one cup of coffee in the AM. And I get the same kind of hot flashes as Pierow described. Plus, far too often I get these prickly sensations with mild to moderate, I guess they're called hives. Can you or possibly someone else help me find out what's going on and what needs to be done about it... if anything. By the way, I've been given, by my VA doctor, about twenty pills to take every day. I have so many health issues that I'm reluctant to bother my very overworked doctor with another ailment that's probably very minor.

I've been taking Niacin for the past twenty plus years with out any apparent adverse affects.Naproxin is the only med found that my body has not been able to agree with my system. But thanks. Any other suggestions could possibly be of help.
