I have a big lump on my left testicle which I've only just noticed - it only hurts when I move and when I did a quick exam I felt that it was hard,

Is it a cause for concern?

When going to Medic school for the Navy, We were advised to do self exams every month. If you found a lump or something painful, see a doctor. A pea sized mass on the testicle could be cancer. If the cord is involved, it could be an infection or inflammation. No matter what, get it checked out by a doctor. Never take a chance with the family jewels. Good Luck
