Children & Headaches

Hello. My son is 9 years old and for about the last 6 months has been having headaches, sometimes accompanied by nausea. The headaches are not severe (except for when he was hit with back to back viral colds/flus last month - the headaches during that time had him screaming and crying in pain.) He seems to get a few headaches per week. If they are really bothering him I give him a child's dose of Tylenol or Advil and that seems to help.
Now I know that headaches are common and often hard to find the root of the problem (my son has food allergies, just prescribed eyeglasses for near-sightedness, plays on the computer too long sometimes... I know all of these can contribute to his headaches.) But what really bothers me is that my brother died suddenly at the age of 20 due to a choroid plexus cyst that grew too big and blocked the flow of spinal fluid to the brain. It was a long time ago but I can vividly remember watching him in the month before his death; he had so many headaches and nausea/vomiting. He went to ER a couple times and saw our family doctor. Each time he was sent home and told he had the flu - that he should stay hydrated. Until one day he had a seizure and went into a coma. He was brain dead and my parents had to take him off life-support. Now I know it is extremely rare to die from this condition - his doctors were completely dumbfounded when brain surgery and later the autopsy showed the cyst blocked the spinal flow. Anyway, I can't help but think that maybe this condition runs in families and it would be prudent for me to ask that my son have an MRI. Do you think my son should have some brain imaging given the family history? I remember when I was diagnosed with migraines as a young adult my family doctor pulled me aside and told me that she wasn't going to take any chances because she (and the other doctors) had missed the cyst in my brother - she ordered a CT scan for me.

I think that you've answered your own question, especially by your last sentence. Am I right?

Have you taken your son to a periactric neurologist? Many things could help him, and he would get the MRI done.

Next time he just starts to get a mig, give him some chocolate, but don't give it to him if he DOESN't have one.

I would make the appt. for the CT scan. My son has been dealing with migraines since he was 5 yrs. old. He will be 8 in a month. He has been on medicine since and has a CT scan annually! The doctors also put him on a diet of no preservatives, nitrates, nitrites, or MSG. That seemed to help for awhile! We still don't know what exactly sets him off. I have found that he is susceptible more when he has had a lot going on and not enough rest in between activities and also I've noticed he will get headaches during testing at school. We also generally get vomiting non-stop to the point of taking him to emergency room for fluids. His last episode he had terrible stomach in such pain. We believe now he gets abdominal migraines. Nobody knows what we need to do to help my poor son. I hope you find the answers you need to help your son.
