    • I have suffered headaches since I was around the ages of like 5 or 6(My granny would give me baby aspirin). These headaches would be throbbing and unilateral and often times I would cry and hide under a cover somewhere. Movement made the headaches alot worse. As I grew older I got the same headaches when weather patterns were weird or when a strong smell was present.
    • But then in high school I ended up with a different type of headache aside from those. I would get headaches behind my eye...effecting only one eye making me extremely sensitive to light. They were really painful and at times my eyes would water and I would try to lay still to get some type of relief. I do wear glasses and contacts but I had headaches regardless of the fact. I would get those headaches like every other day for a couple weeks then they would go. Also it didn't matter the time of day it was...but I rarely had headaches during school. Most of those headaches I had at night or in the late evening or some mornings.
    • I also dealt with one more type of headache on and off and it often times feels sinus related but I haven't been tested forallergies . My doc thinks I have allergies. I disagree but I am not a doctor. But my head hurts when I bend forward. Like its like a throbbing pain when I been forward and feels somewhat like pressure.
    [br>During these series of headaches my doc started me on 800mg of Ibuprofen for the migraine headaches but then when I begin having headaches frequently she did MRI w/ and w/o contrast it was clear, then put me on topamax to see if that helped(switched me off because I am a college student and side effects) and tried Sumatriptan (terrible side effects) moved from that back to topomax because the frequency of the headaches were getting worse. Now I take Topomax and Maxalt as well as Zyrtec and Sometimes I go revert to Excedrine Migraine or Ibuprophen and only use Maxalt for emergency headache reasons.[br>[br>My question is what is wrong with me? She think they are migraines but they could be cluster headaches, but as the headaches are I am not suicidal, as those with cluster headaches describe to be. I need help. My fall semester of my junior of college for the first month of school I ended up with headaches starting of every other day to every waking me up in the night. The topomax have not had the daily headaches for months. So what does that mean? I have had bad headaches hear and there but not those daily headaches.[br>[br>(By the way: When I had the frequent headaches I would try as much as possible to refrain from taking pain medication every day, So some days I will just sleep through or just lie down and wait for the pain to pass to prevent more issues)

    Hi Q, It sounds like you're in an awful flare lately, I'm sorry you're hurting so much. Daily headaches do not necessarily mean cluster headaches, you'll need a proper diagnosis from a doctor for that, so just put that aside for now.

    Please don't worry too much, there are plenty of other meds and many non-med ways of managing migraines. It sounds like you've only touched the surface, there are a lot of options available to you.

    Is your doc a headache specialist? If not, it's probably time to get one, you deserve the best quality medical care so you can get back to enjoying your life again.

    Get an appointment and review your meds. It's common that they'll need to be adjusted for dosage and/or having something added. It can take a few rounds of trial and error before the right mix for you is uncovered. And even that mix might not work well after a year or two, that's just the nature of migraines.

    Here are some ideas of topics for that appointment. I recommend writing down what you want to discuss, and having paper ready to take some notes during the appointment.
  • Meds, Botox.
  • What to do if the headaches start coming back, when should you call for an appointment.
  • Lifestyle. Diet, drink, triggers, supplements, sleep habits
  • Biofeedback, meditation, acupuncture, therapy for pain management
  • Keeping a headache journal.

    In the meantime: :Watch your food and drink. No junk food or anything from boxes with ingredients from a chem lab. Water is your friend, no pop especially diet versions. Sugar substitutes are notorious migraine triggers. No alcohol- red wine is the worst for me, but pretty much anything is bad when I'm in a flare. Have some chicken with rice and a salad, that's easy to make.

    :Some of us swear by magnesium supplements, 200-400 mg/day. A good daily vitamin won't hurt either.

    :Start meditation or some yoga (not hot yoga) or tai chi classes to help bring yourself some calmness. You might be surprised at how effective these are. Easy, gentle physical activity is good for you, much better than being curled up in a ball on the sofa

    I hope that gives you a place to regroup and get started. Just remember that there are a lot of ways to manage the pain, everything will be ok. If you have more questions let me know.

    You most likely suffer from both migraine and cluster headaches. Several treatments can be effective for both types. Magnesium supplementation with at least 400 mg a day can help (IV magnesium infusion is even better, but few doctors do that in the office), blood pressure medications, such as verapamil or candesartan can help and tend to have fewer side effects than Topamax (I rarely start with Topamax because of its cognitive and other side effects), Botox injections are very effective and safe, but expensive. For acute therapy, besides Maxalt you can try other triptans, such as Zomig (which comes in a faster acting nose spray), Relpax, Amerge, and other.
