Amoxicillin Reaction

NicoleCoy01 posted:
My DD started on amoxicillin on Thursday for a left ear infection. Yesterday afternoon I noticed a rash on her belly, back, neck and now today a little on her legs. Its not a raised rash and it doesn't seem to bother her. I called the nurse yesterday and she said it could be a toxic rash that you can sometimes get from the Amoxicillin and will go away on its own. She said it was not an allergic reaction and for her to continue on the amoxicillin. She also said it could be Roseola which is a rash children get after they have had a fever, and she did have a 100-102 fever Monday through Thursday. Anyways have any you or your children had this sort of reaction from Amoxicillin?

What is she saying that it will go away on her own? My DD had the same reaction and the pedi determined she was allergic to all penicillin products. Call again and have the Dr. see her.

It *could* be a viral rash, but it could be an allergic reaction. I can't believe the nurse didn't want her to come in and be seen.

I agree with pp. When I was 19 I had a reaction to penicillin (similar to amoxicillin) like what your DD had. Only I didnt know that is it was from. I was at the dr for my then boyfriend (now ex) and the dr looked at me like what is that rash your scratching at? I told him and he told me to go to the hospital (this is after 2 days of taking the liquid version of penicillin). I thought I was fine but by that night i was having a really hard time breathing so i finally went to the er and they kept me for two days in the er with some kind of IV to get the penicillin out of my system. Don't mean to scare you but when it comes to the penicillin family you need to be careful. Im surprised the nurse didnt want to see your DD too.
