What is the best way to support her?

Dear gurbani,

I'm sorry to hear that your sister has MS, it must be quite a blow to your whole family. And the fact that you have reached out here on WebMD for advice is evidence of your deep caring, you can be a valuable support for her that will make all the difference.

Learn all you can about the disease, there is lots of information on the web (including right here on WebMD) about how the symptoms can affect us and how the various drug therapies work. She'll need as much acceptance, compassion and understanding as she can get while she struggles to adjust to her limitations and copes with the side effects of her various drug regimens.

Mostly, listen to her whenever she needs to talk about it, listen without judgment, and ask what you can do to help her, she'll appreciate that more than you know. She might want someone to accompany her to doctor appointments and be her advocate or a second set of ears, or she might need assistance and encouragement with her injections, or perhaps want help learning about MS, or need physical assistance with shopping, etc. She'll tell you what she needs from you.

Encourage her to join some kind of support group whether it is an online forum such as this or a local in-person group.Talking to others with MS is a special kind of connection since we understand best what she's going through.

Thank you for being a caring sibling and asking how you can help your sister, we should all be so lucky to have a concerned family member such as you. If you have any questions or concerns or just need to vent, please feel free to come here anytime and we'll try to help.
