My mother was DX in 1985 with MS, 2 years before I was born. She passed away in 2008. I recently have been having symptoms and plan on getting checked out.

I've been trying to do some research. Is it recommended to be tested for MS if you have close family members with it? I'm Just wondering if I should of been tested years ago or if others in my family should be.

Dear Leeny,

If a parent or sibling has MS, you have only a 1% to 3% chance of developing it yourself (risk among the general population is about one-tenth of one percent). Since the risk within immediate families is so low, it isn't necessary to test for MS unless you are experiencing symptoms.

Hope this helps.
