Do you have strange and painful nerve sensations? Patients with neuropathy may have a variety of symptoms, including but not limited to feeling (or feeling as if ):

  • painful tingling
  • burning - as if the area is left in a hot flame
  • pinching sensations
  • pulling sensations
  • scraping (across skin)
  • heaviness of feet or legs
  • worsening of symptoms after being upright, standing, sitting, walking
  • standing "hurts"
  • "creepy crawlies"
  • throbbing
  • aching (skin and muscle)
  • "as if you've run a marathon" but can barely walk
  • numbness
  • "feeling that even air 'hurts' " (from wind, breeze, fan, air movement)
  • changes in hot-cold sensation or recognition
  • very cold -- or very hot -- feet
  • now have extremely dry feet
  • now have extremely dry or hard toenails (they may grow normally but the are hard to cut)
  • abnormal sensations on the skin or (it feels like) just beneath the skin
  • a light touch (a sheet being pulled across the skin) or hard touch (being grabbed) may "hurt" - but a firm touch is tolerated
  • sweating on soles of the feet that you never had before
  • cannot tolerate clothing (socks, shoes, pants / slacks)
  • cannot tolerate certain fabrics now that never bothered you before; fabrics feel scratchy, "hurt", or aggravate other symptoms
  • changes in environmental temperature may aggravate symptoms
  • changes in weather barometer (going up or going down), or fronts may aggravate symptoms
  • You might find yourself avoiding certain things that trigger your symptoms.
  • Or any other strange symptom, as a single symptom but often in combination with other symptoms.
  • You find it hard to precisely describe *your* pain symptoms because the pain includes many symptoms.

The Neuropathy Association website has information on types of neuropathy, symptoms, treatment, and the need for research.
