Bottlefeeding question

brandlbunch posted:
Our eight week old has been crying everytime he is fed pretty much since day one. He would grunt, push as if he was pooping with no result, painful gas, and have this sort of gurgly snoring sound whether he is awake or asleep. Four weeks ago we switched him from a generic formula to Lipil Sensitive formula and a #2 nipple which yielded no change. During that 7 week stretch he would only poop every three days.

Less than one week ago we placed him on Nutramagen (was the saving grace for our first son that exhibited the same behaviors) and surprise, he poops multiple times each day. The problem we have is that everytime we feed him he takes about three sips and starts crying. This continues throughout the feeding and worsens as we go. You can tell that he is in pain right after he swallows and it can take up to an hour for him to eat 3-4 ounces if he will even eat that much. There are a very few occasions where he will eat without making a peep but yet he is a very happy baby when he is not feeding. He still makes the wet and gurgly snoring noise all the time though.

We have seen our doctor numerous times and colic and/or reflux has been suggested but doesn't seem solid. We have not tried Zantac or any other reflux medication yet and hope we don't have to.

My questions are:

What on earth could be the reason behind his crying while feeding and also, is the wet and gurgly snoring sound whether awake or asleep normal?

Any insight anyone has is greatly appriciated.

With the snoring/gurgly noises, my daughter did the same thing. We mentioned it the pedi one time and she said it was normal. I think she out-grew it by 3 months old. It was very loud. My husband is a light sleeper and it would wake him up! I have been told and have read its normal for babies not to poop every day. They are using up all of the formula/breast milk for growing so there isn't much left over to come out. I don't think it should take him an hour to eat a bottle. I would keep trying a larger nipple and see if that makes a difference. Good luck!

I'm so sorry that he sounds so uncomfortable.

It is hard to diagnose reflux over the internet, but if reflux seems like a possibility, you might start with conservative measures such as smaller, more frequent feeds, frequent burping and keeping him upright for 30 minutes after a feeding.

An antacid, such as Zantac, is a very common and safe medication to use with young babies. It is VERY well tolerated with no side effects. With the pain during the feeding, he may have some significant pain when stomach acid regurgitates into the esohpagus.

You may really see some benefit with Zantac. If this is suggested by your doctor, you really have nothing to lose (and everything to gain) by doing a 2 week trial. If it helps, your baby will be in much less pain and you will feel so relieved.

Based on your description, you might want to call your doctor and really give this option some consideration.

Most babies outgrow reflux by 6 months of age.

Hope that helps. Please keep us up to date on details...

Thanks for the responses.

lenono97,
I hear what you are saying, we are probably jumping the gun too since he is only two months but our first didn't snore that loud. Not loud enough to wake us up thank goodness!

Dan,
I appriciate the insight and we decided to go out and get another opinion. Seems like Acid Reflux is most likely the culprit. We switched formula yet again to Enfamil AR (acid reflux) and low and behold, not a peep while eating. It was a dream come true. The olny rub is that he hurts after he eats now so next week we are going to start Zantac I think. Like you said, nothing to lose.

Thanks for the info and I will post after we give the Zantac a try.

My DS had (and has still) bad acid reflux. The Enfamil AR and Zantac combo worked wonders for him! I hope it works as well for you.
