How did you decide about vaccinating your baby?

Elizabeth_WebMD_Staff posted:
Questions about vaccine risks and side effects are a major concern among new parents. How do you make sense of all the information coming at you?

Check out WedMD's Special Report - Vaccines: What Today's Parents Should Know to see real life stories of how three moms decided whether to vaccinate their children, who is refusing vaccines, risks and benefits and more.

Then see our Vaccine Tracker to keep your kids information handy and organized.

Do you find this information helpful? Have you made your decision about vaccinating yet?

The daycare centers and schools really have you over a barrel where this is concerned. We couldn't send our baby to a state regulated, structured daycare (which I wanted to do over sending her to a home run daycare) without getting the mandatory vaccines. In addition, schools will not let your kids attend without them. That basically made our decision for us because I must work full time, therefore can't keep her home with me and I can't home school her (nor would I want to).

We are saying ok to the mandatory vaccines and not getting ANY optional ones (such as rotavirus for example).

May I just say too that the fact that the chicken pox vaccine is mandatory is completely ridiculous to us!! Even our pediatrician had to give us the "well it can be fatal" response, but once I said "well so can strep throat or the flu, or any disease if not taken care of or if a person has a bad enough reaction..... plus putting them in the CAR can be fatal. How far do we have to take it???", he nodded an agreement and admitted that if there were any vaccine he could do without it would be that one.

We are choosing not to vaccinate. If we do any world travel though(not anytime soon) we will get the necessary ones only depending on were we go.

Let the debate begin..... So glad no one knows where we live.

I completely understand shoxy. You won't get any witch hunt from me. If I were able to, I would have avoided some of the vaccines as well.

I get where a vaccine such as polio is necessary and I would have elected to get that one anyway, but I feel common sense with regard to some of these vaccines has gone completely out the window.

And I understand your reluctance to share this info and who you are! I often wonder if we chose not to get the vaccines, would our pedes office report us for child endangerment or neglect? It seems CPS is out to take your children from you at the drop of a hat.

I feel the same! Some could really help but it seems things are just getting out of hand like you said about the chicken pox vaccine. I find it a bit much too!

Thankfully our pedi use to be a midwife and while "is a advocate for vaccines" is also very much open to a parents choice. We haven't officially taken it off the table but we feel good about our decision.
