When I was younger, I had gone through something similar. If there is a "crusty, flaky" type substance left on his eyes afterwards, don't be alarmed. It's just "sleep." It's basically his tear duct is over stimulated while he sleeps and releases more than normal, which seals his eyes closed. When he wakes up in the morning, use a warm wash cloth to get it off and use plain eye drops. I am now 22 and haven't had it continue like that since I was little. Hope this helps!
