when to test new born for hearing

My brand new granddaughter is going on two months old. she might have a hearing issue. the Dr. says wait until she's 3 mths, if doubt they'll send her to an Audiologist.

She had an infection at birth. I recognize the skull etc is settling in and hardening. They gave her antibiotics etc to fight the infection. she eats well, sleepts well is active and very aware. My daughter says "she might have a hearing issue" as she doesn't respond to all noises.

Question: At what age, if not at birth, or shortly thereafter should testing for hearing occur, to correct if necessary early on.

In fact I thought hospitals now test for hearing at birth before leaving the hospital. She lives in Texas.
Just call me a concerned Dad, excuse me Granddad

Hi there

You bring up some valid points.

Many states now do universal hearing screens before babies leave the hospital.

Certain infections and certain antibiotics can be linked to hearing difficulties. If the mom has concerns, then it never hurts to ask for a referral to an audiologist.

I hope that helps,

Dr. B
