Implant, extraction and general anaesthetics

I am due to get an implant soon. It will replace a bridge (that keeps falling out, not much retention left to hold a bridge anymore). It involves 2 teeth next to the front tooth.

The dentist is going to place only one implant, with a cantilevered crown on the side. Is this the best approach?

I have severe osteoporosis, but I've had a few implants which so far have been successful, so I'm hoping for the best.

Also, the dentist is giving me the option of general anesthetics for the extraction of the 2 teeth if I want it. Not sure what to choose - please advise...

Thank you very much.

Dear Tomato05:

It is very difficult to give you any advise without looking at your xrays and physically examine you.

It is a completely acceptable treatment plan to replace two teeth with one implant and a cantilever, yet this has to be done in a selective fashion and the cantilever has to be somewhat small.

I am personally not a big fan of sedation for dentistry, yet it is an excellent option for people who are fearful and for traumatic procedures such as extraction of impacted wisdom teeth.

If you trust your dentist and the other implants were done by him and your are happy, ask him the questions you have asked here. However, If you have any doubts, I can only suggest that you go for a second opinion from the specialist in this are: the Prosthodontist. Some prosthodontists are surgically trained as well and can place the implant for you and put a crown on in right away. Again, situation specific.

www.gotoapro.org will have a link to a Prosthodontist near you.

Best of luck,

Thank you very much for your advice. I think I may go without the sedation for the extraction of the 2 teeth - it can't be that bad!

As the single implant and cantilever will save me a lot in cost, I think I'll trust the dentist on that too.
