I have an inflammation of my gums and no idea how it occurred

My gums have suddenly and without easily explicable cause inflated with blood and pus. I brush everyday, often twice. This occurred between going to sleep and awakening the next day. Upon touch, the inflammation appears very solid, which would lead one to the conclusion that it will soon expel whatever it contains but, it hasn't yet and it's been a week now. Is there an over the counter topical type solution for this issue or do I have to wait til I can afford a trip to the dentist to resolve this?

Thanks for the reponse.

To start with you should see a dentist right away. If that is not possible, get some salt and baking soda. Use 1/2 tablespoon of each in a half cup of water. Mix it all up and swish this in your mouth as long as you can stand it or up to 5 minutes. Do this several times a day. If all else fails go to an Emergency Room and let a doctor look at your gum. If he feels it is necessary he will get the on-call dentist. You might need a prescription as well. Probably an antibiotic.

Also if you are indigent then let them know it. You won't be turned away just because you have no money.

Gwen Cohen Brown, DDS, FAAOMP responded:
Hi dcross68,

There are really only two oral reasons to present with blood and pus in the mouth, an infection of the tooth or an infection of the gum/bone surrounding the tooth.

Pus is usually associated with an acute or sudden infection and although it is not likely to become life threatening acute infections can enlarge rapidly and compromise breathing. They can also be quite painful until the infection is released. I would suggest going to a local emergency room at a hospital if it develops into a crisis, or if you can make an appointment with an oral surgeon. Many hospitals have dental departments with attending oral surgeons.

At that time they will determine if he tooth can be saved or if it needs to be extracted. They will most likely prescribe antibiotics and if needed pain medication.

I would suggest Avignon the tooth looked at even if it stops hurting. The infection can destroy bone and the other teeth may become involved the long you wait.

I hope this helps, Dr. Brown
