Pain After Fillings-Normal?

alpha1178 posted:
I had several fillings done a week ago today(upper left side back 3 teeth) and ever since then, the joint (kinda where the jaw hooks onto your face) has been extremely painful and hurts to even open my mouth. Also the entire left side of my mouth is extremely sensitive to cold, much worse than before the fillings. Is it normal to last this long? What can I do until I can get into the dentist to alleviate it?

Zev Kaufman, DDS responded:
Dear alpha1178:

You must see your dentist right away. The joint pain indicates that the bit might be off. The pain to cold is usually attributed to the bonding procedure itself (I am assuming you had "white" fillings placed.)

The first order of business is to check the "bite". That, by itself, might resolve all the issues.

Until then, avoid eating very cold foods, and you may take over the counter ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and if you still have pain, add two tabs of acetaminophen (Tylenol). Their actions are different, and when taken together, they work together well to help with the pain.

Please see your dentist as soon as possible.

Best of luck,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
