Hello: Since March of this year I have had temp crowns on my lower teeth(the entire bottom) They went on as one piece. My dentist keps claiming that he doesnt like the way my case looks and that they were sent back to the lab and its going to be three more weeks. the last time i was told this was last monday. I am now having the sensation of a swollen cheek and am starting to have pain quite a bit of the time. Its to the point where i cant eat without there being throbbing pain in the cheek. My question is how long is too long for them to remain on and what are the possibilities if my situation isnt resolved soon. I have an appt with a different dentist monday for a second opinion.

Dear Shelly3120:

I am sorry to hear about your pain, however, you have to look at the situation for what it is. You are having extensive work and things can and will not go smoothly at all times. It it sounds like you have a local infection that has to be diagnosed and treated.

You MUST talk to YOUR dentist about this right away. Getting a second opinion from another dentist is not necessary, and statistically, the next dentist will not be any better or any worse in his/her knowledge level and skill than your current dentist.
If you are having "trust issues" with the work that your dentist is performing for you, the correct thing to do is to go to a Prosthodontist, the specialist in cosmetic, restorative, and implant dentistry for an expert second opinion.

If you trust your dentist so far, tell him about the infection and have him diagnose it and treat it properly. It is NOT uncommon to make corrections to laboratory work, and that is a good sign that your dentist will not "just insert anything" in your mouth. A three week turn around time for a full arch is normal, and if the provisional restorations are nicely fabricated, they should last you much longer.

The large treatment plans, which I usually perform can last more than two years, and the provisional restorations perform quite will over time. This is not a provisional restoration issue. You have a local problem that can happen regardless of the work.

www.gotoapro.org will have a link to a Prosthodontist near you.

Best of luck,
