Painful to open the mouth wide or eat.

I had a root canal done on 5.21.12 in my bottom right second last tooth. Last one is broken with root in place. Since last 6 to 7 days I have pain when I open the mouth wide and when chewing on food. The pain is felt only in the jaw bone not in the teeth. Any idea what is the cause. Is this unrelated to the root canal work.

Dear An_245708:

I am sorry to hear about your pain. However, dental pain can be caused by many factors. This pain you are having could be caused by the root canal treatment, of just due to the trauma of having your mouth open for a long period of time.

Unfortunately, in order to get a proper diagnosis, you must go and see your dentist and have this properly examined.

I wish that I could tell you more, but this is all that I can based on the information presented.

Best of luck,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
