Permanent Bridge vs crowns and implants?

Question: I have started to have dental implants on two teeth. So far so
good. The next step was to have two crowns and one more implant to fix the balance of my front teeth. The dentist suggested instead of having two crowns & one implant, to have a permanent bridge (four teeth). How does a permanent bridge with four teeth work? The temporary I have in my mouth with four teeth is horrendously large and obvious. Could u please explain how permanent bridges work? Are they like implants or should I stop this permanent bridge thing and return to having three crowns and another implant? Hope this makes sense. Just need info as to what a permanent bridge does and how it works? Thank u.

Dear An_245721:

In almost all cases, I recommend having an implant placed rather than making a bridge between natural teeth. However, in the esthetic zone (front of the mouth, which is visible) a bridge, sometimes, allows us to create a better esthetic result. There are certain issues with the shape of the gums that are very difficult to manage with an implant, but are easier managed with a bridge and a pontic (the fake tooth in between).

What bothers me is that your provisional (temporary) restoration is not to your liking.

A provisional restoration is exactly what is says: a provisional restoration that should simulate the final work.

You MUST speak to your dentist about the fact that the provisional is NOT what you would want the final work to be.

When a larger restoration is made, a provisional is the only way to ascertain the shape and location of the teeth. Usually, once a patient is satisfied with a provisional restoration, we proceed to duplicate it in the final restoration.

Ask your dentist to see pictures of final work resembling yours.

If you need a second opinion, I always recommend going to a Prosthodontist for a specialist's opinion.

Best of luck,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
