Wisdom tooth removal and Trigeminal neuralgia
Javabot117 posted:
recently had my wisdom tooth removed. everything was fine until 3 days later my entire left side of my face had partial numbness that went from my upper lip to the bottom of my eye. since than it feels like my left side of my face is partially numb and every now and than i get a burning sensation on my lips and part of my cheek.. ive been reading that TN can be brought on by dental work.. i really hope my gums are just still inflamed and they are pushing on a nerve or something.. this has turned my life upside down// i am constantly brushing my face or touching it. I believe that the damage was down when the dentist injected me with Novocaine. if the nerve was damaged is there a chance it could heal on its own over the next few months

ps: i also have complete numbness in my left side of tongue

Dear Javabot117:

Nerve numbness and altered sensation are an undesirable side effects of dental surgery. I am sorry to hear that you are one of those less than common cases. Most dental surgeries are performed with excellent results and minor side effects.

It is unlikely that you have Trigeminal Neuralgia. It is far more likely that you have sustained a nerve injury during the injection process. Usually this happens when the needle which passes through the tissues touches the delicate nerves.

Most times, these injuries recover and nerves regenerate. It just take time.

In the mean time, the best thing to do is to go to an oral surgeon, who is the most appropriate specialist for this type of injury, and have the oral surgeon evaluate and map (literally, check which areas are affected) the extent of the injury. With time, he/she will be able to see how quickly your nerves are recovering.

It is, unfortunately, a matter of waiting.

Please go to and look up an oral surgeon near you.

Best of luck,
Dr. Zev Kaufman

thankyou for your response.. im mostly concerned that it may be Trigeminal Neuralgia damage because i awoke the other night to have my whole face feeling like it was burning. it was almost unbearable. it would come in waves and than just stop completely. i will be making an appointment with an oral surgeon. thankyou for the link and your time

HI... I was diagnosed with TN in march of 2011. I just wanted to comment that in almost all cases of TN it DOES NOT disturb your sleep... I hope you find a solution,,,
Zev Kaufman, DDS replied to Javabot117's response:
You are very welcome and I hope that everything resolves for you.

Best wishes,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
