Pain where wisdom tooth used to be

I had my wisdom tooth extracted over a year ago and every now and then the part of my gums where it used to be still gives me problems. Last year my wisdom tooth came in on the bottom left of my mouth. I went to the dentist to have it pulled or "cut out" as the dentist put it. He numbed my mouth and waited ten minutes then began. He was on the right side of my body trying to extract a tooth on the left side of my mouth. Is this normal? He then informed me that he was about to "pop it out". I could feel pressure on my back three teeth. Apparently he had used them as leverage to pop my wisdom tooth out. When he was done and I stood up, I immediately felt pain in my lower jawbone. It honestly felt like he had cracked it. It took almost two weeks for it to finally stop hurting. Was it normal how he did it? Anyway since then it has given me trouble on and off. Sometimes it hurts to chew food on that side and sometimes its painful for days. Right now its been hurting for two days and my gum back there is swollen. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it normal?
