Missing Upper Lateral Incisors, is it bad?

sweetapples posted:
I realized that my upper lateral incisors were missing when I went to a dentist when I was 16 years old prior getting braces. I got my braces then and my Orthodontist said that I could either make space for implants or put them closer together. My Canines were already really close to my center incisors and I could not afford implants so I decided to let the canines take the place of the laterals. Anyway, now I'm am 24 and recently had the curiosity of finding out if there are any bad consequences to leaving my canines take the place of my lateral incisors. I really could not find any answers so I decided to put up the question here and see what answers I would get. Honestly, I don't care if I have a perfect smile so a cosmetic benefit is not really one of my worries but I would like to know any effects it has on functionality. I have my teeth like this and never had a problem but I really want to know.

Thanks in advance!
