    pain after basal joint arthroplasty

Had my left basal joint surgery on Dec 10th. I too was not aware of how long this would hurt and how swollen and painful my fingers would be. Somehow that wasn't mentioned. I started PT on monday and could barely move anything. Whew, it's been a challenge. I am right handed and will need that one done also, but I think it will be quite a while before I want to go through this again. I only took the pain meds for 2 days because while I love a glass of wine, I don't like drugs. Prefer to be clear headed. The pain was bad, at least a 6 or 7, until the 3rd day when it dropped to a 4, tolerable, but the constantness and throbbing that goes on is a bit trying. I thought that the initial dressing pressing on the surgical site was causing most of the pain, then the cast went on and that too was pressing on the site. Now have a splint and guess what, still pressing on the site. Can't win here. It feels so much better when the splint is off an I am doing the heat and stretching and massage.. Having said that, if in the end I have a pain free useful hand it will all be worth it.
