finger swelling/stiffness

every winter for the past four years i've noticed that my fingers will swell, particularly at the joints, and stiffen considerably. there really is no pain to speak of, but the condition is rather annoying as i am a mechanic and rely on my hands being able to function properly. the condition first appeared when living in Colorado right into the beginning of fall and 30-degree mornings. at the time i stocked groceries overnite which meant tearing open cardboard boxes with my bare hands over and over again. my thought was that the combination of the cold and strain on the hands was the issue but it continued after moving back to Texas and mild winters (albeit not near as bad). i called the condition 'sausage fingers' because my fingers literally swelled to puffy sausage-like digits. now i am living in Connecticut and this is my first real winter and with it the sausage fingers have returned in earnest. i can't easily close my fist anymore and there is a good amount of stiffness in my fingers particularly in the middle joint of my ring fingers on both hands. i have noticed the back of my hands swell a little too. that and my hands get cold easily in certain indoor locations. anyhow, i think i have some type of arthritis which is discouraging considering that i'm only 31 and make my living with my hands. i've read that a drug/supplement(?) called, 'Flexcerin' may help. does anyone have thoughts on Flexcerin or any other suggestions? thank you.

I also get the "sausage" fingers along with numerous other aches, pains and swelling, I have Psoriatic Arthritis. You need to see a doctor.................I to use my hands for work.......... so I can relate how painful and difficult it is when your fingers look like "Jimmy Deans" breakfast. Try to see a doctor asap because it can get worse no matter what type of Arthritis you have. Good luck Robin

I too have my fingers swell & painful joints just like clockwork when the cold weather sets in. I found out a several years ago I had osteoarthritis. And then a few years back Lupus. It seem as though the Lupus causing the swelling. I would like to encourage you to see a doctor asap. Whether it be Lupus or some type of arthritis it's best if they catch it now. The meds they have can slow if not put the disease in remission. I'm 41 years old & I know as young as we are we both want to be able to use our hands as long as possible.

Your condition sounds as though it could be arthritis or a circulation problem, especially since you mention your hands also get cold indoors sometimes. If over-the-counter meds do not help you (Aleve or Ibuprofen), consult your Dr. and be sure to mention ALL of the above. If it is a problem with circulation, you will want to have your heart functions tested. Also, on a more unconventional note, I was married to a mechanic for 6 years and he knew an "old-timer" who swore by WD-40. He would spray it on his hands and rub it in and said it was wonderful for arthritis. I wish you all the luck. My son loves working on cars and I think it would kill him not to be able to!

my fingers get really swollen at night when I sleep. So swollen it wakes me up because my rings become unbearably tight. any suggestions to what it might be or anyone have the same symptoms? I have had some soreness in my k nuckles and even other parts of my body where its just a really uncomfortable pain.

Be careful with finger swelling. I had to have a ring cut off of my finger in the ER of the hospital where I work. Underneath the ring my finger had an open sore and I needed antibiotics and a tetanus shot. So I now take my rings off periodically especially when I notice my fingers starting to swell. I also on occasion sleep with a hand brace. I have carpal tunnel and get numbness in my hand. That brace also helpw with the swelling. Good luck.
