Hello, I have looked at the many posts in this forum and am impressed with the knowledge of its members and healthcare experts who provide valuable information: thank you all so much! I am a 33 year old female. with osteoporosis: t scores of -3. I have taken Actonel/Bonniva in the past, with pretty uncomfortable side effects(even when taken as prescribed- I know the empty stomach requirements, etc), and gave up. I stil take calcium/ Vit D , but irregularly, as they seem to effect my digestion negatively. My last Bone scan showed a worse score than previous ones, and my doctor strongly urged me to start something again. Forteo sounds pretty effective with reasonable /manageable methods of taking it (I can "stomach" injections much better than actually taking pills!) but my insurance provider says they won't cover it- what else can I do? Any thoughts or suggestions would be GREAT. I did have my doctor agree to try to appeal it to get it covered, but it is not looking good.
Thanks for any help!

Erin

PS Probably should say I am a 67 year old white female that has never broken a bone other than toe in my life.

Try the injection in your abdomen. There is more fatty tissue there. I found it painless while I did sometimes experience pain, bruising, and bleeding when I injected into the thighs.

Just home from consult with doc and I have Forteo script in my hand plus a travel bag with cold packs. I mail away so won't start until it arrives and then nurse will do first dose with me. I cannot thank you enough for all your input and patience with my too many questions. I feel very good about my decision and am so glad it is over. Seeking info is exhausting.

You are more than welcome. You're doing the right thing. Remember to consume your 1200mg of calcium and 1000 IU of Vit D or the drug won't be as effective. This board is a wonderful tool for people with questions. Do keep us posted on your progress.

I have increased my Vit. D to 1200 a day and last month I had my first Prolia shot. I pray this helps since Fosamax and Boniva gave me ulcers on my esophagus. I have already had 2 yrs. on Forteo so this is my only resource. Have you heard any results from Prolia as yet? I know it is relatively new. In fact, I am the first one in my doctors office to receive it.

bonebabe replied to leescriv's response:
No, sorry I haven't. It's too new for there to be any followup DXA scans on it for real patients. I haven't heard any negative reactions to it though. Good luck to you with this.

Bonebabe thank you so much for past info, I have just finished my first two months and starting my third of Forteo, had blood work yesterday to see about D and Calcuim levels and probably should waiting to reply till results are back but have time this morning. For all worried like I was it is very very easy to do. I drink coffee every monrning no matter where I am so have in my brain coffee and a shot. It works for me. I also had travel concerns and they too turned out much better than I thought. Question tho: is there a weight gain that could be connected to this drug? I am thinking yes but time will tell.

I just found the most wonderful book "Save Your Bones", in which the author, an MA has outlined a simple and effective way to eleviate and correct bone loss caused by osteoporosis, which I have. I've just begun the organic regime but I'll tell you it is worth the read. I was on Fosamax per my doc's recommendation, and all those drugs have biophophates in them, which do not help the body one bit!
I too, went from osteopenia (and taking Evista) to a worsening of bone density and was then put on Fosamax. Felt terrible, quite taking it and discovered this regime. I highly recommend it and feel better already, just knowing someone out there is really listening. Doc's just prescribe medicines.
Good luck.

I'm a 36 year old woman who has had an eating disorder since i was 16yrs old. I only faced up to my ilness when i was 28 and was admitted to a psych hospital for treatment. It has been a long bumpy rd to recovery, and im still not 100% there. This illness had left me with T-score of -4.4 in my Lumber spine and -3.1 in my hips. My dr referred me to a bone specialst who prescribed me Foreto injections which i took for 2yrs, i was so terrified of how bad my bones were but my ED was severe. After 18 months on Foreto t-score for my spine went to -3 and for my hip stayed at -3.1. I had another Dexa done 6mts later after finishing injection, my hip had improved to -2.9 but my L1 &L4 had disimproved by .3 and .2 . I know because of my age i can take v little medication, but after reading so much negative info on prescribed medication, im not sure i want to take anything else. I had no major sideeffects from Foreto, I too have bought the save our bones book and do follow alot of the diet and excerise advice. I also changed my Calcium supplement from calcitude D3 to Algecal plus a supplement a found on the internet which is a plant sourse of calcium, magnesium and has 73 trace minerals including vit D3 vit K2, and Boron. I have not had a natural mensturation since i was 18 yrs old, i started taking the pill when i was 28 and am now on HRT. I dont know will my reproductive organs ever kick in again, im 5ft 6.5 in and 8st 4lbs and know i need to gain some more weight, i live in hope that i will start producing my own estrogen. i follow a gluten free diet as gluten disrupts my digestive system. I want to get another bone scan after 6 mts of taking Algecal and by following the save our .programme, to see if they have a impact on my bone health. Touch wood i have not had any fractures yet. Hope this info helps.

I would like to know whether Prolia and Forteo contain biphosphonate. If they do, they could create brittle bones just like other older osteoporosis drugs (Fosamax, Boniva, etc.)

There is a book by Vivian Goldschmidt, Save our Bones.
She has a master in nutrition and devoted years of research to finding alternatives to restore bone density without taking any drugs containing biphosphonate. Her solution is a combination of (1) Eating foods high in calcium and other minerals needed for proper absorption of calcium by our body, (2) Taking calcium, vit D3 and other minerals, and (3) do the right exercises.

I would like to know if anybody has followed her regime to successfully restore bone density. Thanks!

I am 60 years old and it has been recommended I take Forteo. My concern is I travel most weekend and the medication has to stay on ice and good for only so long. If you can get to your destination in 10 hours how would you refreeze ice packs to bring home. Forteo's response was to stay home it is only 2 years. Does anyone know a better solution.

Dear Chia, I have been on a 2yr. study with Forteo. Well, only 18months, so far, but I belong to an experimental part of the drug. All I know is when they found out how bad I was, (@ 32yrs.) I filled out a bunch of paper work & being disabled I qualified for this 2yr. study. It was all done thru my Dr's. office & the drug co. The only thing I can suggest is talk to your Dr. & the drug co. I receive the meds,, needles, alcohol preps, & dispenser thru the mail & the Dr. keeps up with all results. I wish I had more info for you, but I was @ wits end when this came about & just jumped in feet first! I will pray something comes about, as I have been thru too many surgeries to count, due to osteoporosis and wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Good luck & I am praying as I type! Please let me know if something happens, periwinkle
