Osteoporosis @ young age (osteopenia)

I am a 32 yr old who has had a complete hysterectomy and oophorosalpingectomy in April 2012, I had my first Dexascan a couple days ago and here were my results, 0.8 in my hips and -2.7 in my spine, The OBGYN put me on Minivelle and told me I need to drop 55-60 lbs (however I am only 5'4 and 189lbs) and possibly go see a bone specialist, what can anyone recommend for someone my age to help make my prognosis a little more positive rather that negative?

Because of your surgical menopause and -2.7 T-score, you technical have a diagnosis of osteoporosis. But.....You may not have finished building up your maximum bone mass yet. 32 is sort of on the line there.

Glad the doctor has you on estrogen. That is vital at this point. As young as you are, your prognosis is good. You need to pay attention to any risks of falling or balance issues you may have. What you want to do is avoid a fracture. Losing the weight is a good idea overall. You're too young to be carrying around the extra. It's a known fact in medical circles especially, that people who are overweight tend to become more sedentary and then even more sedentary. This wreaks havoc with your balance and that can lead to falls - which lead to an even greater sedentary lifestyle. A vicious circle.

Walking a half hour at least 3 days a week is a good start. It will focus directly on building the bone in your hips. A by product can be muscle tone and weight loss. Of course too, the more you walk, the healthier you'll become and the better you'll feel.

Do go online to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (www.nof.org ) and get familiar with their website. There's a lot of really good information there and a wonderful FAQ section. You'll find plenty to be optimistic about.
