So my family hasn't ever really seen Madden yet. they live 8 hours away and when I was in the hospital, my parents came to visit me. Unfortunately, they didn't get to see Madden because he was in the NICU and under the heat lamp for more of his stay. He never even got to stay in my room. So next Saturday we're taking a trip to visit because my nephew is going into the army and they're having a going away party for him. Here's the thing. Madden HATES the carseat. he doesn't like being in the carrier in the stroller, he doesn't like being in the car seat for that long, he won't even fall asleep in it. The only time he'll fall asleep is if he's at his wit's end and super super tired and then he'll fall asleep on the car ride. So we plan on leaving at night after his last feed so that he can sleep on the car ride for most of the trip. I know we'll have to stop at least twice for when he wakes up to eat and also to be changed. But i'm really hoping he'll be fine and will be able to sleep for most of it.

Any advice? we plan on doing the same thing on the way back. drive through the night.

We have never taken a long road trip with either of our boys, so I don't have much advice to offer, but it sounds like you already have a good plan in place! Leaving at night when he is already worn out and ready for sleep should def work in your favor. Hopefully you guys can pack some nice, strong coffee to keep you awake for the drive! I bet Emily can offer you some advice as I know she is an old pro at road trips! Let us know how it goes!

Oh yeah, we plan on getting coffee at the gas station before we leave and then packing some extra starbucks double shots or something so that it'll last us at least half way before we have to get gas again. we're taking turns driving of course but if never fails. I always end up staying awake the whole drive because I get paranoid that DH will fall asleep at the wheel. Which is weird because we have been doing this drive through the night for the past 10 years and yet I still can't sleep when he drives. LOL! And he's not a bad driver at all!

Hey Jane!

Good luck on your trip! All I can say is that you will figure out what works best for your family. Like Stacy said, I travel quite a bit, and I travel quite a bit alone with Alex. If you think Madden will sleep well if its his bedtime, I think this is the way to go. And this will probably change as he gets older. Now that Alex is older he rarely sleeps in the car, so we actually like to travel first thing in the morning. We tried traveling (and will be do so this weekend) right after dinner, but Alex usually stays awake the entire time... ugh. You are doing the right thing, planning your stops around meals, that is exactly what we do. Maybe some soothing baby music would help too if he gets fussy in the seat. I also sit in the back with Alex sometimes too. I know it can be frustrating to listen to them cry, and we have spent many trips doing so, but there is nothing that you can do while you are driving, and eventually madden will be a pro. Alex barely cries at all on long trips, it's like he knows that there is no point in crying! Let us know how it goes!!
