Reflux anyone?

So my little man, only 9 1/2 wks old has been diagnosed w reflux. He is on Zantac twice daily. So hard to see him in pain. Anyone else w this problem? Any advice or tips?

I'm so sorry you are going through all of this, it can be rough when they are crying and are inconsolable. My son was diagnosed around 5 weeks old. He never spit up or threw up, he would just scream continuously in between feedings. And I never thought reflux b/c he was always hungry and wanted to eat. The doctor put him on Zantac three times a day and it really helped him. How long has he been on the Zantac? It make take a few days to notice a difference, or adjust his dosing or how frequently he takes the meds. It helped to keep my son upright for a while after eating, it was rough and sometimes nothing helped. The good thing is that he will outgrow it. I was able to completely wean my son of the meds around five months old! Good luck!

if formula, try Enfamil Gentleease. it works pretty well

Thx girls. It's been almost one week on Zantac and I do think ts helping. I also switched him to soy and am adding some rice cereal to his bottles to help with some stomach discomfort I think was adding to the problem. I know we are not supposed to do that but i think its helping. He has more good days than bad which is weird. He doesn't feel bad every time he eats only every 3-4 days he has a flare up. Does anyone know when they generally grow out of this?

You are describing the same thing I'm experiencing with Miles. We have changed our Zantac dose to 4x/day which sometimes helps. Our ped. also mentioned that to get through a really bad day we could use liquid Maalox, 2ml up to 4x daily for no longer than 2 weeks. That was very useful to us earlier this week when Miles cried for nearly 24 hours straight. I remember reflux improving sometimes after we started solids with my older son or between 4-6 mos. Miles has it much worse than Evan did though, so that may not always hold true!

Our ped. also mentioned that to get through a really bad day we could use liquid Maalox, 2ml up to 4x daily for no longer than 2 weeks. That was very useful to us earlier this week when Miles cried for nearly 24 hours straight. I remember reflux improving sometimes after we started solids with my older son or between 4-6 mos. My second son (Tyler) is now 10 months and still on reflux meds but doing very well. I"m afraid to wean him but I hear most outgrow it around 1 year old.

Hi! I check this board now and then and saw your post! My son grew out of his reflux about 51/2 months and we weaned him off Zantac slowly. He's had one flare up when he was around 61/2 months but we didn't have to give him anything. My ped told me they generally grow out of it at 1 yr but, like my son, can feel great much earlier than that and still have periodic flare ups. He's like a different baby now that he's over the worst of his reflux. Good luck and hope your LO is doing ok!
