Hello! I was once told that taking promethazine with oxymorphone would enhance the effects of the oxymorphone. Is this true? Thanks!!

Promethazine is a drug used to help offset nausea and vomiting. It it combined with opiates since some people get sick to their stomach when they take strong pain drugs. It also has a strong sedative effect. When combined you end up with a stronger, more enhanced feeling of the drugs.

I would be interested in any recent research covering the additive effects of narcotic pain medication with other similarly-prescribed drugs (CNS depressants, anti-histamines, muscle relaxants, anti-convulsants, anti-depressants, Marinol (THC) or other opiates. In particular, what are the additive effects of specific substances (for axample, Fentanyl plus (Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Lyrica, Neurontin, Marinol, etc.) all as breakthrough medications.

I have heard of this before, but haven't found any scientific studies on this. I assume you mean an enhanced euphoric effects. That I don't know. Of course it would enhance the sedation effects of either meds and lessen the histamine effects of the opioid. I would like to know what you find out.
There is a medication that enhances the "high" or euphoric effects of narcotics, but for obvious reasons I don't think its a good idea to mention this medication on here!!

Thank you so much for the reponse!! I think that I had heard this from my MD's ARNP awhile back. I have to take the promethazine for the nausea side effects of the Opana. I was hoping that if this were true, I may be able to take less of the Opana. I haven't really noticed this yet though. Thank you again!!

It was believed for many years that the promethazine enhanced the pain killing effects of opiates, making them last longer and work better. I believe that I read recently in a nursing journal that studies showed this not to be true, that it was just that the patients were fairly over-sedated.

If you still have nausea as a side effect of the Opana, then I would try the promethazine as a treatment for that. I would also beware of driving or using machinery, etc. until you know the sedative effects of using these two drugs together.

Do a search on a medical site like Medscape to check for recent (or old) medical studies on the effects of these two drugs used together.

Take care, Annette
