When I see someone new with back pain, one of the first things that I recommend is starting a walking program. I think this helps for a number of reasons including strengthening support muscles around the trunk and legs, improving blood flow to the spine, and decreasing stress through exercise and some fresh air. I have had great success over the years using Pilates with my patients who have back problems. If there is a well-regarded practitioner in your community, consider signing up for some sessions with him/her. We have also found tai chi to be highly therapeutic and safe to do for folks with all kinds of pain problems including back pain.
And gravitate toward an anti-inflammatory diet with lots of omega-3 fatty acids, leafy greens, and pigmented berries to help lower inflammation and improve circulation.
