Pain after hysterectomy 6 years ago

I had a hysterectomy six years ago due to abnormal growth on my cervix and Uterus. Six years later, I keep getting short sharp pains in my pelvic area where the surgery was performed. The pain only lasts for about 10 to 20 seconds but feels like a knife being inserted in my belly. It does not happen every day but it does happen quite a lot. I only had my Uterus and cervix removed. The doctor told me it is hard to tell if it is scar tissue but I had two choices. I could either take over the counter pain medicine and just deal with it OR he could go back in and remove the scar tissue. I put off surgery again for the longest time just trying to deal with the pain but now the pain is getting more painful and more frequent. What should I do?

You should first get opinions from other general surgeons. Adhesions after surgery are common and pretty much unavoidable. After that, what you do is up to you. If you can live with the pain then live with it, if not then it sounds like surgery is your only option unless another surgeon has a better suggestion.

I would get a second opinion, perhaps with a pain management specialist, there are many options short of surgery if over-the-counter meds do not work.

Take care, Annette
