Pain around naval
avatar
An_246515 posted:
For about two years now, I've had awful pain around my naval that just doesn't want to go away. My Doctor had me do a lot of different test, but couldn't find out what my problem was. I even went to the hospital and they took a bunch of blood but, also, couldn't find out what was wrong. I can't live like this. I am a 60 year old male and I need to find out what's causing this pain in my stomach around my naval Even morphine doesn't take the pain away. Any ideas on what I should do? Thank you for listening.

Has your Dr. considered doing an exlap? (exploratory laparotomy) It's somewhat invasive because they do make a few small holes to put instruments in, but if they've had no other success figuring out this chronic pain for 2 years, it definitely sounds like it's worth it Basically they just put a couple of scopes in and have a look around to make sure all is what it should be. The recovery time is a couple of days and it can be done outpatient. I'd talk with your Dr. about this, since he's come up empty on every other idea.

You don't need the laparotomy too evasive...

You need the laposcopic one done.

I went to the Doctor, yesterday and she said the surgeons don't like to do the exploratory laparotomy, unless absolutely necessary, but I will ask her about the laposopic. Not sure how much more of this, I can take. I asked the doctor for either Demerol or morphine shots I could take for pain and she said they don't prescribe that. That's not right. that's not right, I need something for pain, damn it. Thank you for your input. It's much appreciated. God Bless.

Remember, you are in charge of your health care. If your current doctor can not or will not help you, then it is time to find a new one.

KatMit524 replied to ron1249's response:
In one regard she's correct they don't RX Demerol outside of the hospital and they don't RX morphine injections for anything besides terminal pain. But you can get morphine pills, I take them everyday. There are many different pain meds between the lower level ones that most Dr.'s start with and things like Morphine.

Have you considered changing Dr.'s? If you current Dr. isn't doing "anything" to help with this problem, like Diagnose it, then it's time to find a new Dr. who will help you. In this day and age nobody needs to live in constant pain without a diagnosis for your problem. I'm not sure what kind of Dr. you see, but it would probably be a good idea to see a Gastrointerologist or an Internist.

Hang in there, there has to be an answer for you out there.

Kat

I am over-whelmed by all the information, I am receiving. I really want to thank each and every one of you. I'm on Medicare, SSI, Disability and have Cigna Insurance. The Doctor, Connie Catron, took blood work and a T-spine exray. I hopefully find out the results today. She is a new Doctor. And thank you.

I have 60 millogram morphine. I was on that for ten years for low back pain and the Gastroologist did an upper and lower GI and he said the pain in my stomach was from taking morphine for so long, but now I'm taking it again, and it takes hours for it to work, if it works at all. I will keep everyone informed on what's going on. Sorry about the mis-spells. I am over-whelmed by all your input and I want to thank each and everyone of you. God Bless all of you. I hope they find out soon because I have had enouhg, and there's only one answer for me and I'm not ready for that, but will if I have to. God Bless.

Hello Ron1248,

Welcome to the board. I'm sorry to hear you are having a tough time. Your posts are concerning in regard to the medication you mentioned; please tell me if I have misinterpreted things.

You seemed disappointed that the doc wouldn't prescribe anything for pain (like morphine shots). Did she prescribe anything at all? Or are you taking the morphine that was previously prescribed by a different doctor for that 10 yr period?

If you are taking a medication that was prescribed previously for that amount of time, even if it was for the same condition, it could pose harmful to your system (eg. respiratory depression) because your stopping the med has altered your tolerance level. 60 mg's doesn't seem like a dose that any doc would start a patient on, and you most likely worked your way up to that dose over a long period of time.

I wouldn't take any prescription medications prescribed previously, be it for a recurring problem, if a significant amount of time has passed. Medications do go bad/expire and the chemical components can be altered which could lead to dangerous effects.

If I have misunderstood your posts, I apologize. I just want to caution anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation.

Ask your physician for pain relief-you are entitled to it. I hope things settle down for you soon. Take care, B

I'm hoping to hear from the Doctor on Thursday. She must have got the blood teat and t spine exray back by now, and I will ask her for some pain meds to ease my pain. I appreciate everything everyone is saying. I'd be lost with all of you. it seems to keep my spirits up because for awhile there, I just wanted to go see my maker, but thank you all and I truely believe one of these Doctors will find out what's going on. I was in a methadone clinic for the morphine and didn't take any for six months, but the pain in my stomach was still there. The Doctor mentioned my pancreas, not breaking up the food right. We shall see. Thanks again and God Bless each and everyone of you for your input.

Hello Ron, I hope you got some answers today. My question still remains, are you taking an old prescription of 60mg of Morphine? Like I said, if you aren't tolerant (you haven't taken this dose/med for a long time) your body may not respond too kindly. Additionally, if you ask your doc for med's, she/he need to know what you are taking so drug interactions/ overdosing are avoided. (but I may be too late w/ that suggestion).

I hope you don't find my inquiries too invasive, but I tend to care about fellow pain patients, especially when their health is at risk.

You don't have to answer my questions, I just wanted to offer insight.

Best of luck to you, and PLEASE don't ever feel like you need to "meet your maker" anytime soon. There is a nice support system here for ya.

Take care, B

You may need opioid therapy, but not Demerol or morphine shots. There are plenty of oral medications available for pain, try those. Maybe see a pain management specialist??? Ask your doctor for either a better answer to your questions, or a referral to another doctor who can give them to you. Some insurance companies do not even require a doctor to make a referral, you can get one on your own.

Have you had an MRI of your abdomen? That is far less invasive than surgery and should be the next step in making a diagnosis.

In the original reply to your post, the person described a laparoscopic procedure rather than a laparotomy which is an open procedure (more invasive).

Take care, Annette

Pancreatitis can be very painful. Try changing pain meds or using a non-drug pain management technique if you have had addiction problems in the past.

Morphine is not the only choice.

I went through a methadone clinic to get off the morphine and was taking 45 mgs every day for six months. I didn't do any morphine at all. The morphine I'm taking is from March 2012. I called yesterday to get a script for pain meds. I'll see today if they are in. I also have vicodin and endocet. Thanks everyone, but I'm am tired and need to go.
