What's wrong with me?

Hi All,

How do I begin? Well, I'm a 23 year old female. I have generalized anxiety disorder and I'm a bit of a hypochondriac, so that's my disclaimer right there. Well, because of those things I find it hard to believe myself when I feel pain or whatnot. My parents and others certainly look at me with frustration if I complain about not feeling well, so I try and keep it to myself.

So when for the past week or so since I got back from a trip I've been feeling bad, I've just tried to ignore it. I get stabbing headaches in the back of my head off and on, but I figure it's from reading too much. The terrible back pain along my spine is probably from the awful bed I slept on for 2 weeks while I was away. My lips turning purple and feeling faint on the airplane was probably from anxiety. All those things I can rationalize to myself.

What I haven't been able to account for, which is what I hope you guys can help with with (ease my neurotic mind) is that for the past few days I've gotten stabbing pain through my chest from under my shoulder blade, under my left arm pit, and a weird stinging on the left side of my chest that feels like I've been stung by something, but I haven't. In addition, when I woke up this morning, and less so in previous ones, my arms felt really weak. I've been getting plenty of sleep. Yesterday I was feeling weak all day as well, and at one point I sneezed and almost passed out. I had to lay on the floor. I hadn't had anything to eat until dinner though, so that could have been it. But I normally don't eat much until later. My fingers have felt very stiff too.

Today I feel weak. My arms and legs are freezing cold. My hands were burning at one point. My face also seems rounder and more puffy. I thought that might have been from allergies. I have taken benadryl the past two nights as I have terrible allergies and my throat was tight. Underneath my tongue has also been really "puffy". Eh.

Oh, I'm a mess. I have dyshydrotic eczema. Not sure that I spelled it right. I did have an infection of my toe about two weeks ago, but that seems fine now. I have a very sensitive digestive system. I've been to the hospital for it a few times. They're not sure what causes it, but I get terrible stomach pain. I think I've had an MRI, but they found nothing. It just resolves itself. I've been told my dad's biological mother had stomach problems that caused her to be in and out of the hospital a lot. Never met her though. Geeze. I'm a problem child, but there's a lot of illness in my family so it seems to be a family curse.

I can't have caffeine. I had a can of Pepsi months ago and I ended up on the floor, my heart racing and going out of my mind for like an hour and a half. I try and avoid caffeine now, but I have chocolate every now and then. My heart still flutters sometimes and it makes me fidget. It's odd.

If I eat certain foods from some places, my heart starts to race after, I feel faint and nauseous, and it goes through me and then I feel better. I'm guessing that's a food allergy?

Anyways, enough of my belly-aching. If anyone can give me a clue as to what's going on with me, I'd appreciate it. I can't go to the doctor's as it's too expensive and no one believes me anyway. I've had blood tests, especially when I started gaining weight and loosing my hair quickly. Oh boy. But they said my thyroid is fine. My hair is thinner than it used to be. My hair dresser said so too. It's not all grown back, but it's stopped falling out like crazy. >.<

*sigh* Really, I'm appreciative if anyone's just read through this whole mess. Any help is needed and appreciated!!!

Hi there...

Unfortunately no one online can diagnose you...So I would just make an appt. with your Primary Care Dr. and speak to them about your concerns. Since you are taking the time to post on here and this has been going on for a bit...it doesn't sound like an emergency that you need to go to the ER or anything...but only you can make that determination.

If it were me, just make an appt. with your regular Dr.

Are you already seeing a Psychiatrist for your GAD and other issues? How about any type of threapy or meds to help with this?

From what you write, it doesn't sound like you have a very healthy eating plan. To stay healthy, you need to eat a good breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to keep your metabolism going throughout the day. As well as for your blood sugar. If you are not eating until late in the day or skipping a lot of meals, this can cause havoc in your blood sugar.

As well as if you are eating junk food or too much salt and not drinking appropriate water throughout the day (8-10 glasses) then your blood pressure can get out of whack and cause lightheadedness and other issues.

So if you aren't getting the right amount of calories per day and mixing that with lean protein, complex carbs, fruits and veggies...this can cause your body to retain weight as your metabolism will slow way down. Terrible diet can cause hair loss, dry skin, so many issues.

How about daily exercise? Do you exercise at least 30-45 minutes each day by walking, biking, swimming?

Are you in school? Do you have a full time job?

All of those questions are just out of curiousity as I mentioned in the beginning, no one here can diagnose you so I hope you can see your Primary care and double check these things to ease your mind.

Please see your own doctor for a good evaluation and diagnosis.

Let him or her know about your anxiety disorder, let them treat that as well as any physical problems.

My best advice is to avoid eating caffeine or anything that makes you feel sick. There are elimination diets that can help you figure out what you can and cannot eat safely. Talk to your doctor.

My internal medicine doctor said to take prenatal vitamins for hair thinning, she had read some medical studies about it working, and had a few patients that felt positively about it. I had a normal thyroid test also. They are just over the counter vitamins, so they should be safe until you get an okay from your own doctor.

If you do not feel good talking to your won doctor about all your issues, get a doctor that does make you feel comfortable.

Thank you both for your advice. I am a graduate student and also work part time. I've been off for the summer though for various reasons out of my control, but I've enjoyed the break. I did take a vitamin last night and when I woke up this morning, my back still hurt but I haven't had the numbness or weakness like I have been experiencing. I'm thinking that I might be deficient in something. I have a lot of food allergies and sensitivities so it's hard to have a balanced diet. Whenever possible, I like to make salads and eat properly. But there's a lot of fruit and veggies that I've become sensitive/allergic to recently. I'm trying to find a balance, but I'm still working on it.

As for my anxiety, I don't take any medications for it. It's actually a lot better than it used to be now that I know what to look out for. I also have a good support system with my boyfriend and friends, so that helps a lot.

I think I am going to insist on going to see my GP next week. It's not that I don't like them, but there are a number of doctors and I never know which one I'm going to get. I don't really have a relationship with them where I trust them as I've gotten conflicting advice depending on who I see. My mom's also a nurse so I always have a second opinion, whether I want it or not.

As for exercise, I don't get very much. I don't have an active family and with school and work I'm pretty sedentary. I also get asthmatic when I try vigorous exercise. I'm going to try swimming though. I'll also try and eat more regularly.

If your thyroid is "fine" then I presume a doctor ordered a panel? Why cant you go to the doctor again? I'm confused because your symptoms are scattered and you are affected by so much. Pick a symptom that is most bothersome and get your foot in the door somewhere. If your anxiety is worset, talk to a psychiatrist. You may be a candidate for anti-anxiety medication. Then ask them who to see about other afflictions. If you're allergies are the worst, see an allergist. Get food allergy tests done. If you're in school then there should be decent programs offered through your institution or they may have recommendations for you. It sounds to me that your anxiety is most bothersome. But like I said, you determine what needs attention now. Best of luck to you. Hang in there and don't stress yourself out.

Thanks for explaining more. It does sound like you don't eat very well or exercise at all which could account for so many of your health issues.

Have you actually been tested for allergies? I've never heard of someone actually being allergic to all fruits and vegetables...(ok...maybe from my 5 year old grand nephew but that is just the dislike for the taste! LOL)

So, to have a true allergic reaction to something is pretty rare. What type of "sensitivities" do you have with apples, oranges, pears, plums, cherries, cantelope, honeydew, bananas, etc.

And then all the different variety of veggies? Again, it would be extremely rare that you can't find things to eat for a proper diet including fresh fruit, veggies, lean meats and complex carbs.

As far as exercise goes...are you being treated for asthma by a Dr.? Do you have medication and/or an inhaler? Even people with asthma can find ways to exercise. Since you are an adult now, what your family does should not effect what you do for your own life. So even just walking for an hour at a slow pace each day is doable and shouldn't bring on an asthma attack. Believe me...I know as I had asthma as a child and you could not keep me from running around all day long in the summer time or evenings. So glad you are starting with at least the swimming but need to find things you can do every day rain or shine, warm or cold weather.

Exercise and healthy eating is crucial to everything regarding our health. I would hope that you don't smoke (obviously if you have asthma that would be horrible)

Again, I'm certainly not a Dr. but everything you listed can be caused by being too sedentary with all your muscles and spine being squished by sitting or laying around all day/evening. And then many of the internal things you listed by having a bad diet with simple carbs, sugars, salt, fats, etc.

And you didn't mention whether you are being seen for your GAD by a Psychiatrist? Are you going to therapy and/or taking medication for this?

We have to realize that a Dr. is only going to do so much for us and we actually have much more control over our own health than we knowl. We can't expect a magic pill to solve our problems. Not that modern medicine isn't important....but I'm saying that you have to look at your own lifestyle first for the answers.

Eating well and getting enough exercise always comes first.

Do you have an albuterol inhaler for your asthma? An ER doctor that I used to work with had asthma, as did 2 of his 3 little boys. They were all very active, he suggested folks with exercise induced asthma use their albuterol about 15 minutes prior to starting any exercise. Discuss this with your doctor before trying it of course.

If you are sedentary, talk to your doctor first before you start any exercise program. Just mall walking is fine to start out with. I do about 10 minutes of weights, then 60-90 minutes of bellydancing to DVDs on the TV daily. It is a program I can do at home any time of the night or day. It is also something to work towards, not do all at once. Works for me.

I would suggest you find a doctor you like and stick with him/her all the time. I think it is best to build a relationship with a doctor and stick with the same one all the time.

YAHOO for your mom, nurses are great!!! I know as I am one, albeit retired.
