Posting this here in hopes that somebody has a similar experience or advice.

I'm 18 now and have been having problems since I was 12 or so. I have extreme fatigue (have no energy left after climbing stairs and have to rest, barely able to get out of days some days, etc.), weakness in my legs, and extreme chronic pain in my legs, hips, and lower back. I'd describe the pain as the aches that you have during a flu, or even the day after working out too hard (except obviously, much, much worse); it's almost like a dull ache in the bones or muscles.

When I was younger it wasn't nearly as bad. I was tired and sore all the time, but I attributed it to the sports I played (hockey, rugby, football). As the years went on I started missing more and more school, playing less sports, and started having to go home from. Two years ago I missed 3 months of school because of extreme fatigue. On most days I was sleeping for around 20 hours a day and could barely leave my bed. My doctor attributed this to mono, even though all of my tests came back negative. Eventually this wore off and I was able to get on with my life.

Then, back in December, the pains, fatigue, and weakness got much worse. I also had a migraine for 30 days straight (I get migraines from time to time but nothing this serious). My doctor prescribed me Elavil, which completely got rid of the migraine after a week or so, as well as some pains that I had in my joints. She also prescribed Toradol and Tramadol to help deal with the pain, but they come nowhere close to getting rid of it.

I've had blood work done dozens of times, seen a neurologist, rheumatologist, immunologist, endocrinologist, internist, had CT scans, bone scans, MRI's, even a muscle biopsy in my leg. Almost all of my tests come back completely normal (my urine often has high protein content and the bone scan revealed something in one of my knees, but nothing serious). My doctor though I might have Fabry's Disease, but the muscle biopsy came back fine. Right now I'm waiting on the test results for Lyme disease, but Canadian tests almost always come back negative, so I'll need to get tested in the States.

I really hope there's somebody out there who might know what this is; I'm willing to try anything. I'm going to try a gluten-free diet, even though my diet isn't too bad.

I guess some other things that might be worth pointing out are that when I was 12 I went to Mexico and spent a bit of time in the jungle; when I came back I was extremely sick (nauseated, etc.; like a flu). I'm sure that's nothing though. Also, I've had 5 concussions, nothing too major, and again all of my scans always come back fine.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. I want my life back!

Hello-

Have you considered Fibromyalgia? It's most common in middle-aged women but males and younger people can have it too. It's diagnosed by ruling out other ailments. I'd suggest going to the Web MD Fibromyalgia community and reading about people experiences and symptoms there.

I would suggest you see a doctor for a real diagnosis if you think FMS is possible. My pcp diagnosed me, and got a consult with a rheumatologist to confirm it.

Take care, Annette
