I have postherpetic neuralgia and I am going into my 5th month. I have been taking gabapenten and my question is what can I do for the itching. I use cold compresseds, lidacaine lotion 2.5%, It helps but it is an on going thing. I never know when It will take off and it is not a pretty sight to see a grown woman walking around moaning and scratching like I have fleas. Do I just do what I can or is there something I can take to help this from reoccuring all the time. I also take an allegry pill.

Thank you for your post. Itching is not uncommon. There are a number of oral medications that can be used. Topical agents can also be used. I would discuss this specific problem (itching) with your doctor. Conventional medications such as Gabapentin can be very helpful in term of treating pain but as you point out itching often persist and necessitates alternative treatments. Good luck!
