Hip Joint and Outer Thigh Pain
avatar
bpcookie posted:
For a while now I have been having pain at the hip joint of the leg and outer thigh pain. Sitting seems to aggravate it. When I get up to walk, I can hardly move my leg. When I try to walk it feels like my muscle, on my outer thigh, is pulling on the leg bone. It feels like I'm going to either pull the muscle off the thigh bone or snap the muscle. Thats the only way I can explain it. I'm sure others have had this same pain. If you have had this pain before, what on earth is the problem?

The red shows the area of pain BUT I don't have the pain on the lower part of the leg, under the knee.

I have similar pain. They tell me it's a combo between fibro and osteoarthritis, with a herniated disc in my back that pinches the sciatic nerve...

Have you spoken with your MD about this?

No, I haven't talked to my Dr. yet. I have so many pain issues that my PS told me that she was only going to work on one problem at a time. lol. So I haven't mentioned that to her yet. But thanks for your reply. It could be related to my back pain.

I would definitely mention it to her next time you see her. It could be associated with your back, or it could be something else she needs made aware of. I wish you best of luck. It's hard dealing with different kinds of pain all at once. Drives me crazy at times LOL

Hi BPCookie,

I have osteo arthritis and bursitis and this may be your problem, as well.

I hope you get it figured out soon. I know how painful and irritating this can be.

You will probably need to see a specialist.

I thought I would bring up a few other potential causes of outer thigh pain that you could consider reviewing with your doctors:

Meralgia Paresthetica is a nerve pain syndrome that causes a burning, tingling pain on the outside of the thigh. It is usually caused by compression around a nerve called the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Sometimes the compression is caused by weight gain or pregnancy, but I have also seen it occur after other surgeries on the hip or back.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome is caused by inflammation in a thick band of fascia that covers the muscles on the outside of the hip and thigh. This can sometimes be a source of knee pain and in other cases it can cause outer thigh pain. The right stretching and strengthening exercises often lead to improvement of this condition.
