I am 28 year male. I developed neck, shoulder and arm pain about 5 months ago (last week of Jan 2011). I lifted a 80 lb weight in gym I think that's was the cause. In Jan, i had lot of pain (9/10 on scale) while standing and setting in the chair (for 2 weeks) my doctor looking at my MRI scan which showed little bit of bulge in disc in between C5 & C6 - referred me to physiotherapist eventually the pain reduced but didn't become zero... whenever i do any activity using my right arm the pain reoccurs.. Today again after 5 months i went to gym started doing some free weight exercise within 3 hours the pain has become intense it's painful to turn my head to the right or stretch my neck from side to side. the pain is traveling from neck to shoulder and move down the arm.
In between i went chiropractor for 2nd opinion while going to physiotherapist and nothing worked out.
I am wondering it would be problem with the nerve that goes from neck or cervical to arm which has got affected.. I am confused whether should i consult a chiropractor or neurologist for this problem.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
fido
Ditto on what swank said. Stay away from the chiropractors. Get a firm diagnosis from a neurologist and ask the doctor if chiropractic is okay to do. Some injuries the chiropractor can make worse. Don't let them fool you with their cheapo-x-ray-o-matic machines they have. They aren't doctors. Go see a doctor first. Get referrals if necessary from your PCP. A referral to physical therapy may help too as they have traction and spinal decompression techniques that could help the disc slide back into place.
And, I wouldn't lift any more weights until a doctor says it is okay and won't cause further injury.
I don't know if you are a experienced weight lifter or not. If not, after the doctor clears you to lift weights again, consult with a personal trainer on site to show you the proper way to lift weights to prevent future injury. For me, I was doing a lot of the lifting the wrong way, which can lead to back pain.
Take it easy and keep us posted.

Orthopedic surgeons are surgeons, and surgeons tend to think that surgery IS the only option. Just get all your options first, then think about it and decide what to do next.
Take care, Annette
Although a few may have gone to both chiropractic and medical school, that is not the norm.
I have been to both, but would only go to a chiropractor after being thoroughly diagnosed by an MD, and only for a small group of things.
Take care, Annette
This past Fall developed numbness and tingling in my Right arm bad enough that it woke me up....I found out about the Laser Spinal Institute and went for my free consultation. I had laser surgery on 1/31/11, was back to work in a week and only wore my neck collar for two weeks! That is the way to go if you can afford it. They are located in Scottsdale, AZ, Tampa, FL, and not sure of the other location. I recommend seeing them - if they can help you they will, if not, they will tell you they can't!
Good luck,
Donna
