OT: Name pronunciation poll

cduffy posted:
So this baby boy still doesn't have a name...but I think we're getting close! The latest is Callum. DH is kind of worried how people will pronounce it. I won't tell you how we want to pronounce it, but I want to know how you would pronounce this name.

Take the Poll

How would you pronounce Callum?
  • Coll-um (as in call on the phone)
  • Call-um (as in the word calcium)
  • Some other way...

I actually thought CAY-llum when I first read it, not sure why. Maybe just because I have MAY-cie.

But how are you pronouncing Cal-um, Michelle? Like column, or like cay-lum, or like cal (as in calcium)- um?

KCAimee replied to cduffy's response:
I thought of cal like calcium. That's what first popped up for me.

It funny because people will pronounce it however they deem fit. DD is Alexa and she's called anythig from Alexis to Alexia...lol. Hell, I'm Lindsay and some people even call me Lind-SAY

I thought cal- like calcium.

Never heard the name before. I like it!

cduffy replied to katieb426's response:
I had never heard it either, but read a book recently that had the main character named Callum. After looking into it further, it was the 6th most popular name in the UK in 2006; it's just rare here.

katieb426 replied to cduffy's response:
So how do you think it's pronounced? Have you heard it? Do you have any British friends?

avatar
cduffy replied to katieb426's response:
Well, we want to pronounce it Cal like calcium. We really love the name Cal, just Cal (like Cal Ripken Jr), but thought we should make it longer to be more formal. So, Cal can be his nickname.

No British friends! But searches on the internet came up with Scottish people saying it's pronounced like "column" (it's Celtic) and then many other things saying it's cal like calcium. Who knows...but I guess we'll probably be correcting people either way, huh?
