1 year old and lactose intolerance

My little one has been on whole milk for about 2 months now. Last week, he developed a horrible case of explosive diarrhea and it smelled awful! He had diarrhea anywhere from 1 - 3 times a day. The doctor says he may have developed a lactose intolerance. We switched him to soy milk 5 days ago. The diarrhea has subsided a little, but he still has maybe 1 loose diaper a day.

How long should it take before his bowel movements are back to normal? How long should I wait before thinking it's not lactose intolerance and maybe something else?
