Grand daughter with fever of 104

I had my grand daughter last evening for an overnight. Her only complaint was a tummyache, as she described it. When I asked her to show me where, she pointed to midline, just below the umbilicus. She was otherwise playing, laughing, eating, drinking and while distracted forgot all about it. My concern was when she woke up at 5 AM this morning and had a temp. of 104 (orally). I gave her tylenol and put her in a tepid bath. It went down within 30 minutes to 100. I am a nurse, but have not worked around kids, nor had any little ones of my own for many years (except grandkids). I know things have changed regarding temperatures of that reading. I just wondered if anyone had any advice? Also, it may be important to know that she is here for 2 weeks visiting "daddy" who him & momma split up about 5 months ago. Moom has moved about 8 hours away with her, and this was her first visit. She Skypes with her mom nightly and last night said she doesnt want to go back. Related possibly?

She probably has some sort of bug.

I've dealt with a lot of high fevers in my older daughter. Here is what our pedi has advised us. He is more concerned with how the child is acting, than what the temp is. He also wants to know how a fever reacts to meds. A fever of 104 that goes to 100 with meds is less concerning to him than a fever of 101 that stays 101 after meds. When a fever stays high, he also has us alternate Tylenol and Motrin. He thinks that Motrin usually works better on a fever than Tylenol, but Motrin is more likely to upset their stomach. If you call the nurse hotline, they usually tell you to go to the ER when the temp reaches 105.

Baths usually make things worse for us, so I like to use a wet washcloth. Also, try to get her to drink fluids. If she won't drink, popsicles and Jello might help.

I hope she feels better soon.

Oh, and if the fever goes back up again, I would consider calling the pedi. I probably should have mentioned that first.

I would treat the fever with meds tylenol or motrin & if she still has a fever tomorrow or the next day I would call the dr.

My DC had some kind of virus this winter where they just had a high fever for 3-5 days with really no other symptoms other than a runny nose. They each were home from daycare for a week.
