    What was your first car?

A college friend just posted a photo of a brand new VW Beetle with a big bow on it for his 16 year old - WOW. (approx $25,000)

What was your first car? Did you buy it or was it a gift or hand-me-down?

I got my moms 1981 4-door Honda - silver with maroon interior.

I was thrilled to have it and paid for the gas and repairs.

However, I was unhappy about the odor. One time after my mom went grocery shopping, a roll of Jimmy Dean sausage rolled under the seat - it was 100+ degrees outside. Even after we cut out the carpet, that car never smelled the same! I probably bought 2 dozen different air fresheners but there was always a wiff of "ewwww!"

It was a hand me down. A red pontiac "boat" for lack of a better term. I think it was a 1978, It was a HUGE car!
Very tough to drive and yes where I grew up we got learner's permit at age 14. We could drive during the day until like 7pm. So there ya go a 14 yr old driving a boat.

My parents bought me a USED Cutlass Supreme. I'm not sure of the year but they bought it from the estate of a deceased lunch room lady from my grade school. So you know my car was hip!! I called it the 'Cut-loose!'

My first car was a 78 Datson B210 or something like that. My grandparents bought it for me but I had to pay them back. I also had to pay for gas and insurance. I didn't even pick it out. They bought it while I was at work. The car was as old as I was. Didn't matter though It was all mine. It gave me my freedom.

14 years old on the road! That's just a baby - where did you grow up?

The thought of my kids behind the wheel is terrifying - I will probably look into getting a family Volvo - I think those are one of the safest cars? Or a horse....

    baby1at35 replied to Haylen_WebMD_Staff's response:
I grew up in South Dakota. It is obviously rural communities and the teens typically help on the farms. That is the reasoning behind the 14 yr old driving age.
I asked when I was home last and yes it is still is 14 yrs old for a learners permit.
I have been driving for a very long time now..haha!

I got my learners permit at 14 too. We got our permits for the same reason. You can still get a permit at 14.

I am so not ready for Olivia to be driving. We still have 10 months before she can get it. At 15 it is restricted and at 16 it is a normal license.

I was talking to one of Ava's friends mom on Sun at a birthday party. Her oldest daughter will be 16 next school year and attends the same HS that hopefully my children will attend. She said that the principal frowns upon teenage driving and does not allow them to attend functions by carpooling.

Is it sad that that made me giddy? I have 10 then I'll probably be begging for another driver.
    Haylen_WebMD_Staff replied to UKbluegirl2's response:
That principal probably isn't very popular!

I did actually say to the 7 year old yesterday - I wish I could send you to the store!

My first car was an Oldsmobile Omega. It was brown with a brown interior. I paid $500 for it then the motor blew up in it within a year & I had to pay for that too. I was living on my own, 18 & it gave me wheels so I didn't have to walk everywhere anymore.

I got a 2002 Honda Civic when I was 19. It was a brand new lease that I paid half for. The only reason I got it was because I came home from school and began to commute.

I have a lot of highschool kids on my facebook because I used to babysit them or I know them from the neighborhood or whatever. So many of them are going to be seniors in September and there parents are buying them brand spanking new cars! One girl hasn't even passed her road test yet!!
