Steph - question re: swim team!
    Haylen_WebMD_Staff posted:
7.5 year old DD just "tried out" and made the swim team at a local city park.

I'm so excited for her and she is over the moon.

Question: What style/brand of goggles/swim cap/suit does Levi wear?

    She will practice an hour M - F with a meet on Saturday's for 4 weeks - any tips/tricks?

    iocasta responded:
Congrats! Goggles are a huge issue with Levi. It took us several pairs for him to like one and they are TYR's youth flexframes. As for a cap, he uses a TYR wrinkle free junior silicone cap. His trunks are Polarn O. Pyret. They make a speedo type trunk but long like boxers but not as long as jammers. Most of the girls I see wear speedo one piece suits. Levi is swimming non-competitively right now because the only programs here are USAA teams. He would be in the 10 and under group and have to swim at or near the regional standards for that age group. The competitive bug has finally bit him, so we are going into look at getting him on a USAA team this fall, or possibly hold off for another year (still trying to decide). We don't want him to get burnt out by having him swim competitively too early.

I'm glad you posted this. I also wondered about the goggles. All the kids at our pool are on the swim team and while mine are not, they keep asking for 'good' goggles. Ava is doing very well with her swimming and would do much better with nice goggles, I think. She opens her eyes underwater and ends up with the red puffy eyes a lot of times because she doesn't like her goggles.

Congrats to your daughter Haylen! Great sport!
    iocasta replied to UKbluegirl2's response:
I wish we had more competitive options like through our park district. It would be a nice bridge between what Levi is doing now and the USAA teams. For example, the regional standard time for a 50 free, for 10 and under, is around 40 seconds with champion time around 30 seconds. Levi right now is at about 1 minute so he is in good position to make a team this fall.

I swam competitively when I was young, and I loved it. I'll bet Levi really enjoys it.

OH BOY! There are not enough swimmers in the 7 -8 so my daughter made regionals when she came in dead last (7th and 4th in crawl and breast) She barely knows the strokes....she's been swimming exactly 3 weeks with the team.

This weekend it's at 8 am at the Los Angeles swim expo center by USC where they held the Olympics.

She is going to get blown away! Every team from LA will be represented there - some of the 8 year olds are on 2 teams and have been swimming competitively for a year or more.

DH and I are trying to keep it light and tell her that this is just for fun but I'm terrified that she will be scared and crushed.....

    URG - any suggestions ladies???

I swam on the Y swim team when I was young. I see the possibility in DS. He loves to swim!

Good luck to her! I hope she has fun & does well!
