My 4 year old's drawings
Bellasmommy4 posted:
My daughter is 4. She will be 5 in January. Her teachers told me about that, I cut out all shows with zombies or anything like that. Now, a couple weeks later, her teachers tell me that she is drawing pictures of someone killing cats and dogs. She LOVES animals. She is a good child. I just don't know why she's drawing things like this. Should I put her in counseling? I just need some advice on what to do or maybe why she could be doing this.

I apologize, there are a few sentences that didn't need to be in there. About the zombies.

There was a child that was drawing some violent images in my daughters 2nd grade class. He was sent to the principals office to discuss and I believe the parents were called.

I suggest you meet with the teacher, school counselor or any other administrator who can point you towards resources if they believe this issue needs to be addressed. A call or meeting with your daughter's pediatrician (without your daughter present) could also be extremely helpful.

Please keep us updated as to what you do - I think your awareness and concern is a great sign that your kiddo will get the help she needs, if she is acting out of stress or fear or anything else.

Thank you very much! I am going to set up a meeting with her teachers. I asked her yesterday after I got off work why she is drawing those things, and she said "Mom! I'm just a scary artist. Duh!" My mother thinks she is just expressing herself, but I just don't feel like 4 year old's should be expressing themselves in that kind of way.

My son is now 7 but he's been a "scary artist" since Kindergarten. Initially, I blew if off as a "boy thing" but the constant stream of free draw papers that had erupted volcanos spewing lava all over villages and huge traffic crashes (both with their fair share of horizontal stick peoples) really started to concern me. I heavy heartedly collected a stack of them and actually brought them to his K parent/teacher conference. They were impressed with his drawing skills and commented on his vivid imagination but said there was nothing in his pictures that should concern me at all. I'm not sure they would have felt the same if his pictures were of someone actually killing something else? I think a quick meeting is your best bet for now.

Best of luck.
