Closing credit cards

I have excellent credit right now. I have debt, but pay everything on time and do not own my own property. We would like to buy something within the next 3-4 years though. I have a bunch of credit cards I opened in the past. I don't use them but I don't like having them around. Is it REALLY REALLY bad to have them cancelled?

Here's an article from a local news station about things to consider when closing a credit card....could be good if done right.
