white chalky stools

the_boys_mom posted:
my almost 4 year old son has loose white stools for greater than 3 weeks. Bloated/foul gas/complains of abd. pain relieved with enormous BM 1-2 per day. Decrease appitite no weight loss. Afebrile. Stool specimens sent & neg for c-diff/giardia/trich. Lab work - CBC wnl; liver profile also wnl. I understand this could be related to liver/gallbladder. I am going to request an abdominal ultrasound on Monday, is there something else that may help to establish a diagnosis? Thank you in advance to any suggestions you can offer.

Andrew Adesman, MD responded:
Is this being evaluated by your general pediatrician?

Although some medications can turn stool white, it most commonly is due to a blockage in the bile duct. Discuss this with your pediatrician. Referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist should also be strongly considered.

Good luck, and give us follow up.

Thank you very much for your reply. My son is not on any medication, I do have a call into my pediatrician. I am glad to say on day 5 of white stools, he did begin having brown stools again, so I am relieved. Other symptoms still continue, so I am still going to ask for the u/s and referral. Thank you again. I'll follow up and share as we go forward.

I am glad his stools have started to normalize, but I am also glad you are pursuing this further.
