mental retardation and early development

My youngest daughter will be 5 in July. She has severe mental retardation due to a rare brain defect she's had since the womb. She still has the defect. Her new neurolgoist thinks she may have a brain tumor. We are waiting to have the MRI w/ contrast to see.

The last few months I have noticed breast development. In fact, by next year or within the next 6 months I will likely put her in a small bra of some kind. She also gives off body odor (as an adult would) and I started putting underarm deodorant on her. I'm wondering if her neurlogical issues may be contributing to this? I developed early as a child (started wearing a bra at but this seems extremly young. Should I disucss this with her pediatrician or neurlogist or both? She is physically healthy (no physical health problems), she is not overweight.

Roy Benaroch, MD responded:
Your daughter's brain issues could certainly be contributing to these changes, especially if the middle part of the brain is affected. The pituitary gland and hypothalamus, located in the center of the brain, regulate puberty and other hormonal changes.

You ought to speak with both your pediatrician and neurologist. If true early puberty is beginning, there are treatments available that can slow or delay this. Best of luck!
