Early Puberty in Girls
Louise_WebMD_Staff posted:
See your doctor if your daughter shows signs of puberty like breast development, pubic or underarm hair development, rapid height growth, onset of menstruation, acne, body odor, before age 8. Early puberty can cause some long term health problems and keep your child from reaching her full height.

What sort of long term health problems might it cause? My twins have both started menstruating early (spotting at age 7 and one has her period mostly monthly now at 10) Just wondering if it's something I should be concerned with.

puberty beginning anywhere between ages 9 to 12 is perfectly normal. My oldest started her period @ age 10, the only problems she has had aren't physical they are emotional. She has had a very hard time with people thinking she is alot older than she is. She has the body of an adult, but she is still a child. Un less you look closely at her face you don't realize how young she is, her braces came off at the same time she grew 7 inches in alittle over a year and has gone through 3 bra sizes (she now wears a bigger bra than me!?!) The biggest problems she has are with boys/men making comments and/or advances when they fail to see how young she is.

Best advice I can give, is if you are worried, talk to their doctor about it. Keep the lines of communication open, I talk alot with my oldest (actually I listen more) about these things. She really misses just being a kid and I try to encourage her to just be a kid.

Good luck.

At age 7, I would definitely taken her in to be checked. At 10, that is in the range of normal.
