There are a couple of ways to predict adult height for toddlers.
The simplest way is to double the child's height at age 2.
Another trick is to look on a gender-appropriate growth chart for the child's height percentile at age 2 and then look at the height for that same percentile for age 18 year.
Lastly, for boys, you can add 5 inches to the mom's height and then average that number with the dad's height. For girls, you have to subtract 5 inches from the dad's height and then average it with the mother's height.
Thank you for this formula! My husband is trying to predict appropriate future sports - for my TWO year old daughter. Looks like gymnastics OUT - basketball IN. Ha, ha. In reality, I'm looking forward to encouraging all activities - team and indivudal - as she moves towards her "adult" height.
Thanks, Dr. Adesman! This is a question I see a lot of parents pondering. I remember when my kids were small I always wondered if they would be tall like their dad. My pediatrician said my kids would definitely be taller than me, and that he thought my older daughter would be tall, based on her height at age 2.
Now, at 19, my older daughter has topped out at 5'9", and my younger daughter, 17, is an inch taller than me at 5'5".
The funny thing is that my older daughter was the shortest girl in her middle school class. And, my younger daughter always seemed to be taller than her classmates.
So, Dr. Alvarez was very much right about my older daughter being taller. Now we just have to see where my son falls in the mix.
My husband didn't quite make the calculations of his pediatrician or height predictors. His dad was 6' and his mom was 5'2', and he is 6'2". Taller than his dad, but two inches shorter than his 6'4" paternal grandfather.
Like his sister, my son is also one of the shorter boys in his middle school class. He's very much hoping he'll be as tall as his dad. Only time will tell.
Let's have some fun. Here is WebMD's Kids' Height Predictor . Use Dr. Ademan's formula above and the predictor and see what height each one says your kid will be as an adult.
Which one do you think might be closer? What height would you LIKE your kids to be ideally?
Well we have the tall genes on both sides. Both my boys are to be around 6'3 or 6'4 which doesn't surprise me. My Mom did the formula on me when I was 2 and she said it came to 6' ... (I am 5'11" Looks like I will have 2 boys towering over mommy!
